How to become a better leader

== Pretext ==
Being a good leader can be quite difficult - and usually also requires some out-of-game personality traits or skills. That being said, you can still implement various tips to improve your leadership.

== Sound confident ==
Whatever you say - sound confident. If you're not sure rushing the enemy is a good idea, but it '''is''' what you want to do - just confidently say 'RUSH!'. Sounding insecure, will make people second-guess your decision. And instead of your full team rushing the enemy and potentially killing them, what usually happens is that some people will rush (because that was your command after all), while others will stay in position, as they heard your hesitancy.

== Be personal ==
Instead of saying 'Someone please heal up this Person' - start by addressing people directly. Whenever you use the words 'Someone, Anyone, Somebody' and similare synonyms, usually what happens is that no-one feels responsible for your callout - and thus no-one bothers to follow it, because 'someone else will do it'. Instead, give direct commands to people. 'Zmeja, go heal Pyra!' would be a much better call out, as now, Zmeja is directly responsible for the task, resulting in a much higher chance of it actually being executed. Zmeja still has the option to tell you that he does not have medicine on him, for example - at which point you are still able to assign someone else.

== Accept your mistakes ==
You will lead your squad to death multiple times. First of all - understand that this is not always your fault. Alas, oftentimes it still is. In those cases, understand that everyone is learning, including yourself. Your squad should understand that you are doing your best - and most likely, no-one could have done better. People who blame you, often do so after the fight. They might say things like 'we should have done that' - and while it might be good advice, a lot of people use that to actively demotivate you and try to assert themselves as 'knowing it better'. The old saying goes like: 'You always know better afterwards'. And this is most likely no different. Out of 10 people, almost every time in every scenario, someone has the solutive answer to the problem. But it is rarely the same one. To sum it up. This is a ''bias''. When you succeed a fight, people with a different idea don't know their different idea might have failed, or they might even think it would still have been better. But once you fail, they think their idea was better. In other words, their ideas are 'always' better, however, this is of course not true. Should this behaviour take overhand, either mute those individuals, or make them lead the squad themselves for a while, so they can see how difficult it can be. '''Leading a Squad is hard. Not feeling demotivated and responsible after failing to lead one to victory, even harder'''. If some squad-members do not understand this - they are actively hindering your growth as a leader. Deal with them as you think is necessarry.

== Marks ==
People knowing me, know that I am a fanatical fan of the marking-system ingame. I use it perhaps a little bit too much. And while that might be true, I see leaders not utilizing it at all! Marks can be used in a variety of ways. Marking positions to smoke. Marking enemy locations. Marking gathering points. Marking teammates in need. You might not need to use each and every option, but at least use some options to keep it lightweight - but still effective!

== Assign a co-leader ==
This can be someone who wants to become a leader - or someone with a lot of Perception on his character in-game (usually a sniper). This is vital to success, as there will be times where you will die, at which point you lose your vision. The moment you die, it is of upmost importance that someone else will resume command! Otherwise, your squad will start spreading out and getting picked off one by one without any lead. ''Personal opinion: Don't forget. A bad plan is better then no plan at all!''.

If no co-leader has been assigned and you die, try to tell someone directly to resume command! This doesn't always work, as people usually do not like to lead, but it is realisticly the only option you have at that point.

== Perception ==
Your character should have a high amount of perception, in order to stay out of harms way and still see a lot of the battlefield around you.

Also, do not be discuraged to not actively participate in battle. When I lead, I rarely shoot. I am so busy giving callouts and moving around, that I simply do not have the mental capacity to do other tasks. That is fine, for the most part. Of course there are situations where you should utilize every single bit of damage you can help out with. Or help out a teammate. But you should still focus on your primary objective of leading your team to victory.

== Vision of Protos ==
My experience of the game obliges me to add a few points regarding the game of leaders.

Don't try to manage everything on the battlefield. What each player does at any given time is not your concern. Players are idiots, so don't waste your nerves on everyone. The leader's main task is the general direction of the main group of players. You choose what to do. Push, defend, change position, designate battle tactics.
All other things like marks, assists, grenade spread, heals, etc. are the responsibility of EVERY member of your team. You will be much more effective when useful information in battle comes not from one person who is limited by his perception, but from everyone. It is important to understand that this should be USEFUL information, not emotional spam. People who can't give information correctly in battle should be mercilessly muted or banned. "there is no worse enemy than an idiot ally".

When you assemble your ZC team, you need to understand what zone the fight will take place in. Prepare for this at the assembly stage. Tell people what builds and what weapons you want to see. Assign people their roles or split them into micro-groups. Warn the team about the tactics you want to use. If you are lucky and the team is not idiots, they will take the appropriate weapons themselves.

Avoid burnout, your emotional background is very important. As Zmeja wrote above, you need to "sound confident". This is very difficult to do when you are leading people to death for the fifth time in an evening, simply because there are more enemies. A couple of such evenings and you will delete the client (as Zmeja does, after 2 weeks). If you feel tired, delegate command to others. Go into battle, but as a private soldier. This will help you take a break from responsibility and look at your team from the inside. It is very good if your team has several people who are capable of taking on leadership.

Tips

Some perhaps lesser known tips - usually information that doesn't fit any wiki-page and thus is all bundled up here.

* You can open doors and immediately have your character step into the doorway by 'Lockpicking' the doors with the keybind: 2. This is especially useful to block enemies from passing through once you open it, or just for a more fluid movement across the battlefield.

* The game has a positional sound system! Even if you can't see an enemy - him firing will give you a clue to his approximate position!
* Tracing will also help determine the enemy's position. You can see from which point the enemy is shooting, even if it is behind walls or smoke.

* Loot your enemies as soon as possible! Should you get pushed back once more - if they get revived, they will only have their armor on them, with no weapon to shoot and no supplies to be helpful! Alas, don't get too greedy looting. Getting out of position can lead to a quick death!

* When logging out, a character inside the zone will stay there. Meaning it could still be killed during your absence. Try to log out in safe zones.

* Shooting a rocket slightly behind your enemy may cause them to slide towards your team, allowing him to be focus-fired down!

* Walking through the sewers will not display you on the map. Use this to ambush enemies more effectively!

* Running around makes you bleed out more quickly. Prefer walking, or better yet, stand completely still, when dealing with high bleeding.

* Learn to use medicine. It helps keep your Bandaged Level at a low number, keeping your First Aid as a backup in case you need a hefty heal quickly. Using First Aid over and over again ensures you will not be able to heal properly, quickly.
* Always learn the perks and traits of the weapon you are using. Different types of sniper rifles are designed for different types of shooting. Some are better for precision eye shots, while others are most effective for spamming the torso without a scope. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a weapon is very important.

* Smoke your teammates before reviving them and do not attempt to First Aid them once they get revived. Their bandaged level will be at 100%. The only way to make them get back up again is to use medicine on them. [[Med-X (Drug)]] paired with the [[Drug Dealer]] trait is extremely potent to get them quickly on their feet, as they will get an immediate boost of 150 HP at the cost of 80 Bleed damage, allowing them to run behind a corner where they can finish up healing themselves.

* If multiple want to cross a building with multiple one-hex doors, simply click on the other side before anyone steps in and do NOT click your mouse again. Your character will continue to run the calculated path, so long as it does not try to enter a hex that is already occupied by someone else. That means even if people before you cross the doors, as long as you don't try to step onto a hex that either someone else is already on, or someone wants to step onto as well, you should cross the house effortlessly with the rest. There will be instances of people being too close to each other for this to work, however.

* Our sound design team makes constant efforts at adding realistic weapon sounds of the guns you use to the game. We already have a wide variety of sounds that can allow you to identify the weapon used by sound alone.

* Having troubles dealing with Sneakers? Burst alongside walls - as this will be usually where they will position themselves at. Sneakers try to avoid open fields, as this actively lowers their sneak-value. Hitting a Sneaker might not immediately desneak them - but it will lower their Sneak Value substantionally enough, to where you'll spot them and give them a second burst to fully desneak them - at which point they will suffer a cooldown penalty before going into sneak again.

* Having trouble dealing with Snipers? Even high Crit Resistance will still allow Snipers to hit you semi-reliably with criticals - as they almost always have over 100% critical chance. However, [[Armor Class]] is a constantly undervalued option at making their shots be less lethal by targeting your torso (in addition of lowering their chance to hit to begin with). This is more effective on mobile classes, that can take full advantage of their Armor Class.

* The Ampulomet is a reliable way of getting fire onto your enemies from very far away, forcing them to move and redeploy. Unlike Molotovs and Flamethrowers, it has a maximum range of 70 Hexes.
* Carry 2 types of weapons. At best, one for close combat, the second for long or medium. For any class, you can find such combinations. BG heavy sniper/machine gun and flamethrower. SG machine gun or sniper and shotgun or pistol.

* You can fill empty water bottles at wells. A quick and easy way to remove radiation, especially with bottles so easy to come by!
* Use the util slot. Always. Even if you're not a good grenade thrower, put a medkit there for better healing.

* Rerolling does not reset your progress on the Support Skills! ([[Outdoorsman]], [[Science]], [[Engineering]])

* Making a second or even third build once you unlock them is much faster due to the XP boost you will get if you have a higher leveled first build.

* Always focus-fire Protos!

* The leaderboards are a great way to figure out who has fancy legendary guns and is thus worth prioritizing.

* Living alone is hard. You can't even use a lot of loot because of your class, so taking in friends into a base, especially those with different classes, helps making sure you have much more gear at your disposal.

* Friends are temporary. A shiny legendary is forever.

* Extremely note-worthy deeds (e.x. season victory) might result in a permanent decoration, like a statue, on the map - visible for everyone in future seasons! Sometimes, those deeds (or fun-worthy occurences) might come in form of scattered notes.
* Get to know the artifacts, it is very likely that some of them can significantly affect the quality of your character and your overall efficiency.
